Marsa Football Club Story

The club was founded on the 4th of January 1920 underthe name of Marsa United, but during the GeneralMeeting held before the season of 1947 - 1948 the nameof the club was changed to Marsa Football Club. Theclub President, Marquis Barbaro, the Secretary, JosephGoggi, the Treasurer, Gejtu Saliba and the Manager,Henry Azzopardi, were the pioneers of football in Marsa. At first the team premises were at Timber Wharf, but after the war the team moved to the present premises at Balbi Street. On April 1919, before the date of foundation, Marsa United played a friendly match which finished in a 1-1 draw against H.M.S. Clemantis. The Marsa United debut in an official league came on January in the civilian Football League. Floriana and Cospicua didn"t join in because they boycotted the League due to a dispute over the gate money. Marsa United, together with Valletta United, Cottonera F.C. and Paola United, joined Sliema Wanderers and Hamrun Spartans in the Civilian football League.

Marsa United
The first competitive match was played at the Mile-Endground against Paola United which finished 4-0 in favourof Marsa United. That season, the Scarlet Runners(Marsa United nickname) finished just before PaolaUnited at the bottom of the table,. with only 3 points. Onthe other hand, Marsa United reached the semi-final ofthe cousis Shield Competition and had to face the champions Sliema Wanderers. A curious fact that happened during that semi-final was that Marsa United surprisingly found themselves 3-0 up at half time. During the rest period however, some delirious Marsa supporters foolishly took alcoholic drinks into their team dressing rooms and started prematurely celebrating their victory over the champions. When the second half started, some of the Marsa United players were so drunk that they could hardly stand up and so the Wanderers the result 4-3 in their favour!

Club History
The most unforgettable season was that of the 1970-71. in that season Marsa F.C. lead the table for thewhole season but at the end they were reached bySliema Wanderers after beating Hibernians. A deciderwas played in order to decide the champion of thatseason. In the decider Marsa lost 3-0 and finishedsecond. However, Marsa F.C. took part in the EUFA Cup. The draw was a lucky one, Marsa had to face Juventus of Italy on th~ 15th September 1971 in Malta. The result was not great, Marsa lost 6-0 in Malta and 5- 0 in Turin. From there onwards Marsa never came any closer to win their championshiP of the highest division. During the season 1983-84, after being promoted to the Premier Division, Marsa F.C. reached the Semi-Final of the F.A. Trophy facing Zurrieq losing only with a last minute goal. An interesting point to mention during the 1983-84 F.A. Trophy, is that to reach the Semi-Final Marsa eliminated Valletta F.C., who had just won the championship three days before. The 1991-92 season was one of the most memorable seasons Marsa F.C. has ever had. Engaging some of the top Maltese players and an ex-full international foreigner, introducing youths from the team who won the youth section the previous season, Marsa F.C. aims were quite clear - The Promotion. The first test was the Mosta F.C. Tournament. In their first ever appearance in this tournament, Marsa F.C. won the tournament, the Challenge Cup against the organisers, and the best player of the tournament. After winning the Group 5 and qualifying for the quarter finals in the Il/Ill K.O., Marsa F.C. were to face Kirkop United, Fgura United, Zebbug Rangers, Sta. Venera Lightnings, Vittoriosa Stars and Sta. Lucia in the II Division Sectin A.Winning ten matches out of twelve, two draws and no defeat with a total of 22 points Marsa F.C. were the first club in the M.F.A. to win the first honour and the promotion to the 1st Division during the 1991-92 season.
